Caroline Powell from New Zealand was first cab of the rank riding 'Lenamore'. A refusal at the early question at fence four to five ( an acute angle three strides apart) saw them add 20 penalties and two time penalties to finish cross-country day in 35th place with 87.30.
Disaster struck for first out Australian Team Members, Sonja Johnson and 'Ringwould Jaguar' at the very testing first water complex number 12. Jaguar missed his stride up onto a bank and was wrong for the boat arrowhead just a stride away. The horse did not fall but the very awkward jump unseated Sonja who fell. She remounted and continued the course.

Heike Kemmer rode Bonaparte for Germany and placed fifth in the Grand Prix Kur.
'Ringwould Jaguar' clearly unhurt, continues the course with this jump.Sonja chose to go early as she thought the course would get wet and slippery as the day progressed. However, she went at the most slippery time, with Jaguar slipping over on the flat later in the course, at which time Sonja retired. She was taken to hospital for observation, but checked herself out in time to watch her Teammates finish the course.
Italian Team rider, Marco Biasia looks good leaving the first water complex. However, a stop and time penalties riding 'Ecu' saw him finish cross-country day in 46th place.
Bernadette Pujals from Mexico rode Vincent to 10th place in the Grand Prix Kur.
Part of the 44.000 strong crowd on cross-country day, which thankfully remained fine.
The first of the German Team riders, Hinrich Romeike, was one of the ten clear on time and jumping riding the Holstein gelding, 'Marius Voigt Logistik'.
Irish Team rider, Michael Ryan and 'Old Road' jump through the Windmills Up and Down, fences 11 and 12.
Swis Team rider, Viktoria Calerback and 'Ballys Geronimo' look good over this C element of the Normandy Bank. This narrow fence following a big jump on and off the bank caught some well known riders, such as Andrew Hoy and William Fox-Pitt.
The Individyal rider from Belarus, Alena Tsellapushkina and her Anglo Arab, 'Zalim' head off over fence 17 the beautiful (its all fresh) Fruit Table. Sadly they were eliminated later in the course.
German Individual, Dirk Schrade and 'Sindy 43', added just 5.20 time penalties to finish the cross country in ninth place.
The first water complex, The Seaside Resort was quickly surrounded by spectators.
British Team rider, Daisy Dick rode the Irish gelding 'Spring Along' for an impressive clear to finish the day in 15th place on 64.30. The Bristish Team finished the day in second place.
Australian Team rider, Megan Jones and her 'Kirby Park Irish Jester' looked super on course.
Danish Team rider, Peter Flarup jumped clear on 'Silver Ray' to finish in 24th place on his not so good dressage score of 74.60.

Experienced French Team rider, Nicolas Tousaint had a stop with his Selle Francais gelding, 'Hildago de L'lle", to end the day in 32nd place.
Australian Individual, Phillip Dutton and 'Connaught' had a duck out at the troublesome fence 27, the Eifel Village on the Lake, to end the day in 31st place.
Many Australians would recognise this horse, as it is the former John Bird ride, 'Fifth Avenue Fame'. Ridden by Japanese Individual, Yoshiaki Oiwa who trains with Andrew and Bettina Hoy, he jumped clear to finish on his dressage score, 74.5 and move from 73rd to 23rd place.
It might be hard to recognise Vanda Morgan's former ride,'Task Force', but he was ridden by Individual, Jan Byyny from the USA.
Australian Individuals, Shane Rose and 'All Luck' were another combination to fall and the difficult Seaside Water Complex number 12. Sadly they retired, but both Shane and 'All Luck' were OK.
Reining European Champions, Zara Phillips and 'Toy Town' proved how they did it. The British Team rider and daughter of Princess Anne and Mark Phillips finished the day in the lead on 41.70 penalties.
Australian Team debutante, Clayton Fredericks produced the goods with a clear jumping round on 'Ben Along Time'. They added just 4.40 time penalties to end the day in fourth place.
Bettina Hoy riding for the German Team produced a super and agressive round riding 'Ringwood Cockatoo' to jump clear. A "Team ride" towards the end of the course cost 7.30 penalties. However, they finished in second place on 43.70.
Some people will do anything for a good view.
British Team members, William Fox-Pitt and 'Tamarillo' were caught by the skinny brush after the Normandy Bank for 20 penalties. They added another four time penalties to finish the day in 17th place on 69. The British Team are in second place going into the showjumping.
Like William Fox-Pitt, Australian Team member, Andrew Hoy had a small control problen with 'Master Monarch' at the botton of the Normandy Bank for the addition of 20 penalties. The addition of 6.80 time penalties has them in 22nd place on 74.40. The Australian Team are in fourth place after day two.
Austrian Team rider, Harald Siegl and his Hanoverian, 'Nebelwerfer' jumped clear, but were quite slow in doing so for the addition of 26.40 time penalties. They go into the showjumping in 35th place.
Surprisingly, German Team rider, Ingrid Klimke and 'Sleep Late' had two stops on course to end the cross-country day in 39thy place.
Dutch Team Rider, Werner Geven rode his Irish bred, 'Esker Riada' to finish cross-country day in 47th place.
Three time Kentucky winner, Kimberley Severson and 'Winsome Adante' had a refusal and time penalties to end cross-country day in 16th place on 67.70.
Jan Brink rode Bjorsells Briar 899 to ninth place in the Grand Prix Kur.
Andreas Helgstrand rode Blue Hors Matine to second place scoring 81.5% in the Grand prix Kur. This beautiful mare has been the Dressage sensation of the Championships. She has such lovely, elastic and easy movement. She seems on springs so spectacular, easy an soft with passage and piaffe of incredable quality. Just when everyone thought it was going to be an Anky /Isabell tussle, along came the youthful pair from Denmark to win the Grand Prix, take the Bronze medal in the Special and the Silver in the Kur. They were the only pair to receive a standing ovation from the 44.000 crowd. It was a moment I will always remember.
Third place in the Grand Prix Kur scoring 80.7%, Isabell Werth riding Satchmo. They produced a lovely Kur, but their best effort was in the Special yeaterday, when they won Gold.
The Gold medalist scoring 86.1%, Anky van Grunsven riding Keltec Salinero.
The famous Anky smile. 'Keltec Salinero' was always going to win the Kur and with it the second Individual Gold Medal. Anky looked very tense before the test but this super pair produced their trademark sensational work, with super movement to brilliant music.
Fourth place in the Grand Prix Kur Nadine Capellmann riding Elvis VA scoring 79.9%.
