Damien OIiver claims ninth Scobie Breasley Medal

Champion jockey Damien Oliver has claimed his ninth Scobie Breasley Medal at the Victorian Trainers and Jockeys award, confirming his status as one of the sport's greatest ever jockeys.

The 46-year-old won the award 22 years after he claimed the first Scobie Breasley Medal awarded, polling votes at 26 metropolitan meetings.

His win was an upset result with metropolitan jockeys' premiership winning rider Craig Williams expected to take out the award.

Oliver finised with 54 votes, 10 votes ahead of Williams who was runner-up and 18 votes ahead of Damian Lane, who won the Victorian jockeys' premiership with 129 winners at all meetings throughout the season.

Emerging rider Ethan Brown won the "One To Watch" award after riding 49 winners in the season to win the Victorian jockeys metropolitan apprentices' premiership while Ben Allen won the Victorian jockeys' premiership.

Melbourne Cup winning trainer Joseph O'Brien, who trained Rekindling to victory in November, won the Fred Hoysted Medal, voted upon by the racing media.

Oliver has won 110 group ones in his brilliant career and kicked off his season with a brilliant win aboard Voodoo Lad in the group three Aurie's Star Handicap recently.
