Pateman escapes immediate punishment for cobalt charge

Champion jumps jockey Steven Pateman will be free to take eight top rides at Warrnambool on Tuesday after the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board delayed determining his penalty for a cobalt conviction earlier this year.

Earlier this year Pateman, who also has a trainer licence, was, along with his partner Jess Barton, found guilty of administering, or causing to be administered, cobalt to the jumper Sir Walter Scott before a race at Coleraine on September 24, 2017.

The RAD Board, chaired by Judge John Bowman, considered the punishment on Monday afternoon and later issued a short statement saying it had "reserved its decision on the question of penalty in this matter".
