Rudolf Zeilinger Showcases The Importance Of Classical Dressage Principles

The ultimate master of dressage training returns to Boneo Park with an experience not to be missed. Zeilinger will present two separate showcases on training dressage the classical way. On Friday Rudolf will ride two up and coming Grand Prix superstars, demonstrating his training techniques of riding the Classical way. On Saturday Rudolf will teach three of Australias most exciting combinations, explaining how to produce a Grand Prix Champions.

Rudolf Zeilinger is a German Grand Prix rider and trainer, he was mentored by the great Will Schultheis. Through the years he has trained and produced a number of the top riders and was the Olympic Danish team trainer for the past 19 years. In September 2017 Rudolf was appointed Spanish senior team trainer by the Spanish Equestrian Federation. Now he visits Australia to share his vast knowledge and training techniques.

His training techniques are centred around training horses in a system cemented using German techniques from the 19th century. As riders we have all heard, “establish the basics”. You cannot build a tower without the basic building blocks to support the structure and growth. Rudolf demonstrates the importance of a deep seat. He wants to encourage the horse to move off the leg without constantly nagging them, “you don’t need your leg, he should react to your seat. Your horse should be able to read your seat and interpret forward and back while you keep soft hands and encourage more rhythm and self-carriage.

One of his long-term students stated his training system is “85% seat and 15% hands”. Zeilinger encourages the horse to move energetically, so the horse flows from back to front. Although he admits our job today is a lot easier due to our vast developments in the sport and breeding over the years. Rudolf stated in his last visit to Australia, that Australians all use the same hymn book to train their horses and that they need to adapt and change to keep up with the rest of the European style and results in the discipline of dressage.

Rudolf holds a world of knowledge in the dressage discipline and his return to Boneo Park for the Martin Collins Australian Dressage Championships gives Australian riders the advantage of learning new training methods to further develop their own training at home.
