Wirragulla polo club media release 2018

The Prydes Easi Feed Hunter Polo Challenge 2018 held on the weekend of 15&16th September hosted the best tournament to date - celebrating the Club’s 95th year! With over 800 people through the gates, who came to watch some of the most competitive polo ever seen in Dungog.

Forty players from all over Australia made the trip to the picturesque town of Dungog to compete - hoping to get the chance to win our prestigious cups and have their names engraved in Wirragulla history!

It may be dry, it may be dusty, the state is declared a drought, but there was no exception made on the field! The polo was fast and furious, spectators cheering on over the sound of the horses hooves galloping to goal! We had ladies racing for a bottle of Boydells finest sparkling wine, amazing fashion on the field sponsored by our Dungog's ‘hidden valley’, the polo pony racing the ‘Coolmore’ car showing off real horse power and of course the famous divot stomp!

A total of 20 matches where played across the three grades over the two days. The qualifying teams playing for finals on Sunday.
The A grade final, a local team from Mc Grath Hunter Valley real estate battled against Ellerston from Scone, with the ‘Mackay Cup’ being taken home by Ellerston. It was an extremely fast, intense game - was no place for the faint hearted!

The B Grade final was an exceptionally close game, Wirragulla vs Ellerston B. It was goal for goal, strong defence from both teams but at the end of the fourth chukka Ellerston had the win, taking home the ‘Alison Cup’!
The C Grade final was a round Robbin with Wirragulla, Tamarang and Mudgee all playing their hearts out to win the ‘Skene Cup’! It was an even match with Wirragulla sneaking a couple of quick gaols awarding them the win!

The quality of the polo here in Dungog just gets better and better every year. The club also held their annual dinner function for the competitors, members and supporters on Saturday night, which was a total sell out! Wirragulla are one of the only clubs in NSW to hold an evening event - it was an incredible night and fun was had by all!

The event raised a valuable $10,000 for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service!

Country polo has stepped up a whole new level this year at Wirragulla and we are thrilled to host such a fantastic event proudly supporting the Westpac Rescue Helicopter service- Wirragulla are enormously grateful to our sponsors and the support of our members and to the community! With out the encouragement and support country polo clubs couldn’t operate - our gratitude extends beyond words! The club is excited to see what next year brings! Diary this for 2019.
